Rodents: Rewind Demo Features Slick Pixel Art, Fast Combat

Rodents: Rewind is an upcoming sci-fi thriller about a man who can steal memories from other people. A demo for the game is available now on Rodents: Rewind’s itch.io page. It took me about 15 minutes to play through the available content.

In the demo, you take control of a sword-wielding “Rodent” a super-soldier type mutant that most everyone you meet seems to recognize. But you don’t because you can’t remember anything. The first half of the demo has players running between shops, trying to reacclimate to who they are and what happened.

While you’re figuring things out, you get thrown into a few combat situations. Things currently are a little clunky, playing in the browser version, but I know that’s only temporary and hopefully playing with a controller will feel more intuitive. The combat is not nearly as slick as the pixel art, but after a few attempts I was able to get through both combat situations. It just involved a lot of slide-dashing and luck.

I did like that the combat demands finesse, if you get shot you’re toast and have to restart the segment. With that level of challenge, you’ll really start to feel like a super soldier in no time, so long as you stick with it. Or just spam-dash and cross your fingers for good luck, like me.

There was only one segment where you, as the Rodent, stole someone’s memory, but it gave me a good idea what to expect and how it affects the gameplay (new character POV with different combat abilities). I’ll be curious to see how the feature is fleshed out in the full release.

Check out the game’s demo on itch.io and follow the developer on Twitter to stay up to date on the latest from Rodent: Rewind’s development.
