Prepare your brains, Superliminal is out now and it’s going to take some getting used to. Players will need to recognize forced perspective illusions if they hope to make it far in Pillow Castle Game’s new first-person puzzle game.
You may be familiar with concept of forced perspectives and not realize it. Movie-makers use forced perspective to convince audiences that one object is significantly larger than it appears to be, without messing too much with the object’s actual size. Peter Jackson used forced perspective a lot in the Lord of the Rings movies to make certain characters appear bigger or smaller than they actually were. Forced perspective is also used in architecture — Disney often utilizes the technique to make some buildings appear bigger than they are.
The catch with forced perspective is that it’s only convincing from a very specific angle. Viewing the effect from another angle shatters the illusion. Discovering those illusion-making and illusion-breaking angles appear to be the key to solving Superliminal puzzles.
To no one’s surprise, Pillow Castle Games credits “Inception” as one of Superliminal’s inspirations.
Superliminal is available now on the Epic Games Store.
