Sparklite tips guide and boss fights

Sparklite is a new action RPG that Red Blue Games released on November 14, 2019. Players control Ada, an adventurer keen on helping the people of her floating city destroy the evil forces that infected their world. Sparklite may look like a roguelike game at first, but the game is not. When Ada dies, she’s sent back to the floating city with all the currency she was able to collect on her run. The only items that are lost upon death are readily-found, limited-use items, so dying isn’t too much of a setback.

Check out our Sparklite review (coming soon) for a full rundown of what you can expect out of the game.

Even though Sparklite isn’t a hard-mode roguelike, the game features plenty of challenging enemies and boss fights, so I wanted to put together a guide to help players out. While there are minor spoilers throughout the guide, there will be major spoilers in the boss fight section, but I saved those for the end of this article. Reach out in the comments section if you have any additional questions about Sparklite, I’d be happy to answer them.

General Sparklite Guide and Tips

Getting into the flow of Sparklite can take some time. Essentially, Sparklite involves players descending from a floating city and into a labyrinthine map that is composed of five different biomes. Each region houses an ability to unlock and a boss to defeat. Killing enemies, finding treasure and chopping apart environmental objects yield currency. Upon death, players return to the floating city and can use their collected currency to improve their abilities or unlock new ones. Once satisfied with their upgrades, players can descend from the city to try to find the next objective.

Play With the Sound on to Hear the Beats

Sparklite Find Beats Tips and Guide

Hidden throughout the regions are tiny creatures called beats. There is a woman who lives in the floating city who is training the beats to sing and will reward you for returning them to her. The beats are hidden within the environment of each region, typically in a small hole or a bush. Audio cues are the easiest way to know that a beat is hidden near Ada.

Once you hear a beat chirp for help, you can scour the area for small holes (use Ada’s robot buddy to dig up holes, once the ability to do so is unlocked) or whack bushes to free the beat trapped inside. If you’re playing Sparklite with the sound off, or listening to your own music too loudly, you might miss a beat or two.

Get Rich Quick

Sparklite Guide Tips and Walkthrough

The key to success in Sparklite is powering up Ada’s gear and abilities to allow her to survive against the game’s tougher enemies. The only way to upgrade is by spending the game’s currency. It can become tedious to hunt down every little bit of sparklite (the currency), so keep these sparklite harvesting tips in mind.

  • Use the robot to turn the mud into money. Ada’s robot can suck up the muck laying around to clear it out of the way. This ability is unlocked about halfway through the game. When the robot fills up his little storage tank, it deposits a block of solidified mud. Ada can go up to the solidified mud and break it open for easy cash. It takes a good chunk of mud to process it into a solidified chunk, so activating the robot when there’s only a little bit of mud around may be a waste of time.
  • Bash the Bugs. In the Goldenwoods, players can find slow-moving caterpillars. Ada can make quick money from one-shotting the caterpillar’s sensitive parts with a powered-up hammer strike. Just watch out, some caterpillars will spit at you.
  • No Cash in the Grass. The only time you should spend breaking apart plants is when you hear the chirp of a beat. I would clear entire sections of tall grass/bushes and never found random sparklite.
  • Wonder Ball Trees. They’re not actually called “Wonder Ball Trees,” but that’s what I called them. They’re the big, vine-looking plants that have purple bulbs near the top. If you whack them a few times with the sword, the purple bulbs fall down and burst open. There’s usually a good amount of sparklite or a limited-use item inside.

Sparklite Boss Fights

There are a handful of Bosses in Sparklite that players will have to defeat to continue the game’s story. While not incredibly difficult, each boss has unique abilities and specific strategies must be used to survive each encounter. This is spoiler territory, be wary.

Boris

Sparklite Boss Boris Guide

Boris is the first boss fight in Sparklite. He sits atop a furnace and controls a giant, spikey, wrecking-ball like mech. The mech behaves similar to the Chain Chomps from Mario games. It’s on a leash so it can only attack in straight lines. By running back and forth and not standing still, you’ll be able to dodge Boris’ attacks. When Boris launches the wrecking ball out, it takes a few seconds for him to reel it back in. Use that time to run up to the furnace he’s sitting on and smack it with the sword.

After launching the wrecking ball at Ada a few times, Boris will activate a vacuum-like feature that will pull Ada in toward the maw of the wrecking ball. Just spam the dash ability to keep a safe distance while the vacuum effect is active.

Timbert

Sparklite Timbert Boss Guide

Timbert is one of the hardest boss fights in the game. His mech is equipped with a giant saw blade in its left hand and a massive log in the other. Between the fast-moving saw blade and the hard-hitting log, Timbert is tough to deal with.

Timbert walks around the battle zone like a spider. Each of his log legs has a red switch on it. Hit the switches enough to turn them off. When all four switches are off, Timbert’s mech collapses for a few seconds, leaving him exposed to Ada’s attacks. Turning off those switches isn’t easy. As Timbert walks, each step the mech takes sends a shockwave out. Players will need to run up to a leg shortly after it lands and whack it a few times, and then scramble back out before the leg lifts up and lands again.

The hands of the mech flash when they’re about to attack so always pay attention to them while dodging the shockwaves. When the saw blinks, run away from Timbert because his saw blades swing out in close proximity. When the log hand blinks, just run around the room and don’t stop, the log will move to your position, pause and then smash down.

Scubert

Sparklite Boss Scubert Guide

As challenging as Timbert was, Scubert is an easy fight in comparison. I beat Scubert on my first attempt. Scubert’s weak spot is the red balloon that he inflates/deflates to rise or sink in the water. Attack it when it’s exposed to deal damage to him.

When Scubert submerges the balloon, he’ll send out waves of bouncy slime balls that Ada must dodge. When he lifts the balloon out of the water, the four nozzles attached to the balloon shoot out a laser-like beam that rotates around the room. Keeping Ada between the laser lines is easy since you can easily see exactly where the lasers will shoot out from. Just stand a few feet away from Scubert and move as the lasers pivot around the room. Occasionally a gremlin on a jetpack flies in and drops bombs. Dodge the bombs and kill the gremlin when he lands.

Scorch

Scorch’s weakness is the big red switch right in the middle of his mech. Scorch has front-facing claws that periodically swipe out like a crab trying to catch a fish. Be ready to dodge out of the way as soon as you see the claws swing out.

Scorch has a few other nasty tools in his arsenal. He can shoot a laser beam that marks an area in a straight line and then causes a mini earthquake along that designated line a second later. The laser itself won’t damage you, but the aftershock it causes will. He also shoots slow-moving rockets that Ada will have to run from. The rockets detonate after a few seconds, so running from them until they run out of fuel and crash is the safest way to deal with them.

Finally, Scorch’s scorpion-like tail flings itself randomly around the battle zone and makes quicksand pits that remain for a few moments. The tail can damage you if it lands on you, so just keep running around (and avoiding running into the quicksand) to stay safe.

Final Boss, Phase 1

Sparklite Final Boss Phase 1

The final boss teleports around the battle area, but he can be damaged whenever he is solidified. He will cast spells that fill the majority of the battlefield with damaging arcane magic, so be ready to dodge out of the red zones as soon as they appear.

He will generally teleport to the four corners of the area, but if he teleports to the middle of the room, he will cause a shockwave and send out a flurry of dangerous energy balls that float out from his central location. Since they disperse from his central location, the closer to the edge of the area you are, the easier it is to dodge the balls. Hit the boss enough and the boss fight shifts into phase 2.

Final Boss, Phase 2

Sparklite Final Boss Phase 2

Now you’ve really made him mad. He uses his harnessed energy to become a massive behemoth. Defeat the minions in each area while dodging the boss’ continued arcane attacks. When all the minions are defeated, run to the blue seal on the ground to be teleported to the next section.

Clear all the sections and activate all the blue seals to doom the final boss to oblivion. Congratulations, you just beat the game.

Special thanks to Youtuber Gellot for the video I pulled the boss fight screenshots from.
