In Dark Star Game Studio’s upcoming boss battler Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption, players are in control of Adam, a soldier without memories who must deal with the consequences of his forgotten past. As part of his journey he must defeat bosses that are the physical embodiments of his past sins. Each boss fight requires Adam to sacrifice a strength, making each successive boss fight harder as the player is stuck with more and more permanent debuffs. The developers are calling it a “level-down” system.

Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption’s publisher, Another Indie, describes the mechanic in the press release they sent to Epic Brew:

Before dueling each monstrosity, Adam must sacrifice a part of himself and accept a permanent debuff. Battles will become increasingly difficult with each sacrifice as Adam’s vitality is reduced, his arsenal breaks down and his armor withers away. Alternate gear can be unlocked in New Game+ mode, lending replayability to Adam’s journey for redemption.

Sinner: Sacrifice for Redemption is set to release on October 18 for the Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, and Xbox One. The game is also set to release on PC through the First on Discord program later in 2018, with a Steam release to follow.
