Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday on the Epic Brew YouTube channel, I feature a new indie game. Last week I selected three very different games. On Monday I showed off Leechbug, a game about leading leeches to their next meal. Wednesday saw Legbreaker, a surprise hit that challenged players to solve platform puzzles while only being able to jump twice. Then Friday’s game, Apple Slash, was a fun, though strange, hack-and-slash game about finding a missing friend.
Each game was a blast and I encourage you to subscribe to Epic Brew on YouTube if you haven’t yet.
Leechbug
Leechbug is the baby game of the week. The developers released a very early build of the game on itch.io and I jumped at the chance to check out such a strange game. While it was obvious the game is still a work in progress, I enjoyed figuring out the mechanics of the game and rounding up swarms of leeches to feast on fish.
Legbreaker
When I first tried Legbreaker I didn’t expect to finish it in one sitting. Nor did I expect it to be as challenging as it is. The premise is simple: each time you jump, one of your legs breaks. Thus you can only jump twice per level. The way that each level challenged me to think differently, using a gradually increasing amount of mechanics was great. With its smooth difficulty curve, I was able to complete the game yet feel challenged with every level.
Apple Slash
Apple Slash was another game I completed in one sitting, without expecting to. While the game ended rather abruptly, and didn’t make much sense, my time with Apple Slash was enjoyable thanks to the simple-and-fun combat mechanics. Equipped with a magical sword, players can slash their way through swarms of slimy enemies using directional attacks and special moves.
