Everyone loves cats. Unless you’re allergic. Or have no soul. But some people extra-love cats. Cattails, a game about cat life, is for those people.
Cattails is a casual, open-world RPG from Falcon Development. It actually released last year on Steam, but is now about to pounce onto the Nintendo Switch on November 29 with a release date price of $14.99. The Steam version is priced the same.
The Switch release date announcement came with some other news for PC (and Mac) players. The developers announced new technical changes to the game that will, “pave the way for the future of Cattails,” and they, “Overhauled the entire code base to make changes that will make Cattails run much smoother on older machines.” Bug fixes and quality of life changes were also listed, but no specific details were mentioned. The developers did elaborate on what they did to get Cattails to run better on older computers.
Essentially, the biggest change in the Technical Update is that we’ve “unlocked” the game speed from the computer’s computational cycle. What that means is that if you’re running Cattails on an older machine (or if you like to place thousands of items on the floor of your den 😉 ) you should find that the game runs a lot smoother. This was a fairly involved process that required us to basically go back through each and every line of code in Cattails and make a lot of alterations. Phew, glad that’s over with!
Falcon Development closed out the announcement with a content patch tease that the developers stated is coming by the end of the year.
What is Cattails?
Cattails originally released on Steam on December 1, 2017. The game currently holds a “Very Positive” rating on Steam, and the only available DLC is a $13.99 deluxe content pack that includes a 45-minute soundtrack, a PDF art book, and an exclusive, in-game cat color if you’re feeling fancy.
The game allows players to control a cat of their design, and join one of three cat colonies wherein friendships (or romance!) will form and rivalries will fester. Players can hunt for critter snacks in the game’s open-world environments, where they can also discover secret treasures and observe seasonal changes.
Players can eventually have kittens and form a cat colony of their own. Cat customization options run in the hundreds so Falcon Development allows players to create and accessorize their cats to their heart’s content.
