Receiver , A Surprisingly In-Depth Shooter from Wolfire Games

You might recognize Wolfire Games as the development team behind the game, Overgrowth or “that rabbit game”, which has been in development for awhile.

Last week, the Wolfire Games team took up the “7DFPS Challenge” where developers had one week to design a brand new first-person-shooter game. Wolfire Games completed the challenge, and Receiver is their product.

Up front, Receiver looks like a simple shooter, almost as simple as what one would find in an old N64 multiplayer mode. Even the description Wolfire provides for Receiver is very simplistic:

“Armed only with a Colt 1911 A1 and an audiocassette player, you must uncover the secrets of the Mindkill in a building complex infested with automated turrets and hovering shock drones.”

The simplicity begins to fade when you realize that each play-though is randomly generated, and since there are no saves/checkpoints, dying in Receiver is permanent, the randomly generated levels will keep things fresh.

The gun handling mechanics look very impressive as well. I have not played the game yet, so I can’t speak for myself from experience, but having watched the video below, I am certain I have not seen anything like this before. You can also disable enemies with a well-placed shot. Disabling them won’t destroy them, but it will make them significantly less dangerous.
