Bob Anderson, Sword Master and Trainer for Hollywood, has Died

Bob Anderson

Anderson as the "Binocular Guy" in Empire Strikes Back

There’s no shortcut to excellence,” Bob Anderson said during a behind-the-scenes interview on the set of 2002’s Die Another Day, and I am sure if you ask any of the actors and stunt doubles that worked with him, they would all agree that Bob expected nothing but the most excellent performance from them. Any movie that featured Bob’s swashbucklery was incredibly fortunate to have actors under the tutelage of such a revered teacher.

Bob’s IMDB page lists a total of 12 films where he’s performed stunts in, and another 22 where he’s credited for working on the crew.

You could say that he was…strict, as a swords master,” Viggo Mortenson said of Bob Anderson in the 2009 documentary, Reclaiming the Blade. “Like a very good teacher always does, he adapts to the situation, and to the person he’s speaking to, and you always feel like he’s speaking directly to you. And not in a condescending way, but he’s trying to get the best out of you, that’s his goal.

Bob passed away at the age of 89, on January 1st, 2012.

Below I have selected a number of film pieces that feature Bob’s work. Enjoy, and remember the great swords master that we knew as Bob Anderson.
