MechWarrior Online to be Powered by CryEngine 3

CryEngine 3, the same engine behind Crysis 2, has been revealed to be powering Piranha Games’ upcoming free-to-play, PC-exclusive, MechWarrior Online.

With an expected relase date of “Summer 2012″ MechWarrior Online allows players to hop in the cockpit of giant war-machines and engage other “mech warriors” in battle. Think of these machines as  Hulked-out Iron Man suits…and everybody gets one.

Players will be able to customize their mechs with upgrades, undoubtedly using in-game currency which can be bought, or slowly earned.

From looking at these concept designs, and knowing how impressive the CryEngine 3 can look (feast your eyes), I am eagerly awaiting more news about this game.

From the press release: “Working with CryENGINE is a true pleasure,” said Russ Bullock, president of Piranha Games. “It is definitely the best choice for us: Both the character animation pipeline with the physics based animations and the destruction system fit our goals perfectly and allow us to develop a truly unique AAA experience based on the award-winning BattleTech Universe.”
