Sony Online Entertainment and LucasArts are planning on sending the once popular Star Wars based MMO to the Sarlacc pit at the end of this year.
The official announcement (which you can read here) states, “The shutdown of SWG is a very difficult decision, but SOE and LucasArts have mutually agreed that the end of 2011 is the appropriate time to end the game.”
The statement goes on to explain that LucasArts plans to have a “galaxy ending” event take place shortly preceding the final flip of the switch.
What could they possibly have planned? Will all the servers just loop the Ewok Celebration theme, and fireworks bounce around all over the place? Or….or, would LucasArts pull something really interesting, like stage an unstoppable alien invasion, akin to the Yuuzhan Vong invasion that occurs in the post Return of the Jedi novels? If that’s the case, Galaxies might just be worth picking up to see that go down.
I am sure the closure of Galaxies is 100% related to the release of the new Star Wars MMO, The Old Republic, which is supposed to come out early next year.
At 8 years old, Galaxies has had a good run within the MMO community. It was definitely one of the earliest MMOs that really carried mass appeal with the Star Wars brand name, attracting thousands to a genre of gaming they might have never discovered on their own.
I never played Galaxies, as I wasn’t introduced to MMOs until I naively decided to try World of Warcraft.
